The Savute area offers a harsh and desert-like landscape in the dry season when the wildlife is supported by the now flowing Savute channel. This contrasts dramatically with the rainy season where the seasonal pans fill with water and the Savute Marsh and surrounds are covered with lush green vegetation that attracts an annual migration of zebra and wildebeest, as well as an abundance of birdlife.

The Linyanti Wildlife Reserve consists of 1,250 km2 of pristine wildlife area, bordered by the Linyanti River in the north and the Chobe National Park in the east. North of the Linyanti River lies Namibia’s Caprivi strip. The Selinda spillway links the area to the Okavango Delta. The region is one of the least visited and most pristine corners of Botswana, shared by a very small number of camps running on private concessions, ensuring that guests are able to view the abundant wildlife exclusively.

Lagoon Camp lies on the shady banks of the Kwando River. Lagoon Camp can accommodate up to 18 guests in 8 luxury tents, one of which is a family unit. Lagoon is renowned for wild dog sightings and also the massive herds of elephant and buffalo which roam the area in the winter months. Each room has a deck with comfortable loungers, offering spectacular views over the lagoon. The thatched main area was designed to fit perfectly into the natural landscape and allow views of the river and wetlands from all areas..

Built on the banks of the Selinda Spillway, about one hour west of its sister camp, Selinda. This classic camp, consisting of four custom-designed tents, transports you back to authentic safaris, but with a modern twist and hospitality. Subtly placed under the shade of the riverine forest, the camp is designed in the style of the early explorers both in philosophy and practice. Whiling away afternoons under the canopy of African ebony and mangosteen trees, interspersed with walks and canoeing, make this a respite from the ‘daily grind’ of a traditional safari.

This authentic tented camp draws on traditions of the classic East African safari with beautifully detailed campaign style furniture made from recycled hard woods, and soft furnishings from Zanzibar and the East. The custom-designed semi-permanent tents consist of two rooms plus verandah, as well as a private open air ‘bustani bathroom’ with hot water bucket showers and flush loo. This is an unassuming camp, light on its footprint but heavy on its experiential luxury. The atmosphere of the lodge is one of bush elegance with relaxed bohemian style, complemented by attentive staff, private professional service and fabulous food.

DUMA TAU CAMP

QUINTESSENTIAL

DumaTau, meaning ‘roar of the lion,’ is a ten-roomed (eight twin and two family) luxury tented camp located in the private Linyanti Wildlife Reserve that borders the western boundary of Chobe National Park. It is situated close to the source of the Savute Channel on Osprey Lagoon, one of the many lagoons within the Linyanti Swamp system, and between two elephant ‘corridors’ – all of which results in a plethora of wildlife on game drives along the Savute.

DumaTau Camp is raised off the ground to take advantage of the fantastic river views. Each en-suite tent is spacious, spreading out under a canvas roof, with clear-storey sliding doors and windows that allow for wide-angled views of the riverfront. There is an airy, expansive dining and lounge area and a pool, all overlooking the lagoon and its denizens. DumaTau has a very light carbon footprint and runs on solar energy.

ZARAFA CAMP

MORE THAN FOLIAGE

Zarafa means “the beloved one” or “the lovely one” in Arabic. The name comes from a giraffe, which was presented to Charles X of France in 1826 by the Viceroy of Egypt. The giraffe was a sensation and everyone who saw the giraffe fell in love with her and asked what she was called. The Nubians, having no name for the animal, called her simply “Zarafa,” which is Arabic for “the beloved one” and which the French then pronounced “giraffe”.

The new Zarafa Camp lives up to the name, inspiring even the well travelled, and renewing the spirit of all who visit.

Zarafa Camp and Dhow Suites are the brainchild of the founders of Great Plains Conservation, who pooled their collective experience on safari to create what they deemed to be the best and most environmentally innovative camp. As a consequence, Zarafa may in fact be the “greenest” luxury safari camp on the continent. Only recycled hardwoods and canvas were used in the construction and all the camp’s electricity comes from its solar farm while ‘bio gas’ plants recycle waste into usable cooking gas.
